How to Bulk Upload Files to the WordPress Media Library Using FTP

Do you need upload files via your FTP to your wordpress uploads directory? Or have you moved your site to another host and need to re-link all the images from your pages and blog?

Unfortunately, you can’t just simply copy files into the Uploads folders in your WordPress directory. While the files will appear in your folder, they will not appear in your media library. WordPress doesn’t not recognize files that are not uploaded via the dashboard uploader. But don’t panic in a few steps you can get all your media files up and running.

Step 1:

First off you need to download and install a FTP software. I recommend using FileZilla: FileZilla is a cross-platform graphical FTP, SFTP, and FTPS file management tool for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and more. With tons of intuitive tools, FileZilla helps you quickly move files between your computer and Web server. If you plan to use FileZilla regularly, you might like the advanced features like manual configuration and speed limit monitoring. While FTP may seem outdated, it’s actually a very reliable way to transfer large files or groups of files to your Web server. And, with FileZilla, you can deploy.

Download: FileZilla Here (please note: you want to download the client version not the server)

You also need to make sure an FTP account is set up on the server. If you don’t have access to a Cpanel or hosting account call your hosting provider and they should be able to help you set one up.

Step 2:

Now that you have downloaded your favorite FTP software you need to connect to your server. To do this you need the following credentials below:

  • hostname
  • username
  • password

Once you log in drag and drop your upload folders in the wp-content >> uploads folder. Do not change the name of the folders.

  • For Example: (you want to move the entire folder into the uploads directory of your word press installation)

Step 3:

Once you have finished with the upload you will notice the files are not showing up in your media folder. You need to relink them using the plugin: Add From Server:

The Add From Server plugin offers a simple solution to bulk uploading media to your site. The plugin lets you import media and files into the WordPress Uploads folder from any location on your server.

To use the plugin, install and activate it. Then go to either the Plugins interface and click on Add From Server > Import Files or in the admin sidebar go to Media > Add From Server.

The plugin will display folders in your WordPress directory. Choose the location of your files and check each of the files you want to upload to your media library. If you want to select all files, check the box next to “File” at the top.

Hope this helps Cheers!!!!
